It has been rightly said that nothing is unimportant, nothing powerless in the universe; a single atom con dissolve everything, and save everything! What terror! There lies the eternal distinction between good and evil. Is my soul the indestructible molecule, the sphere inflated by a little air, which yet can find its place in nature, or is it that very void, a reflection of that nothingness which disappears in immensity? Or could it be that fateful particle destined to undergo, through all its transfigurations, the vengeance of powerful beings?
-Gerard de Nerval, “Aurelia” (1855)
