“RELIGIOUS SONNETS” CHAPBOOK NOW AVAILABLE
by HP
The chapbook “Religious Sonnets” by Brittany Ham is now available to order from our website. This collection by Ham features meditative sonnets strictly formalized in the Romantic tradition, yet undeniably traumatized by Post-Structuralist, Post-9/11, Post-Christian America and all of its phantoms. Still, a hopeful, serene atmosphere pervades in these meticulously arranged bouquets of language, emotion and thought. For more details, please visit our publications page.
These poems ripple in page after page of Romantic rushes, with the images of our modern world teeming, if but to drown in their own plight of continual struggle, death and rebirth– perhaps to identify “these visions of God” with spiritual clarity. That identity, caused from the Cosmic Source to replicate Itself in its myriads, is at the essence of what Ms Ham relates through her song of the lower physical worlds, of spirit’s descent into destitute matter, only to seize a glimpse of the Infinite through the process.
She writes in “Serenity Prayer Number Five”:
“Inside the axis that combines two realms/ the Lord does dwell in their combined array/ And all the ages swept in time are cleared/ away to bring a single, privileged view upon the Lord’s command to see and write/ and wake the writhing Spirit from its sleep.”
And further in “Vision of the Invisible City”:
“The Virgin casts her loving gaze…inside the souls of men…the Lord’s transcendent love….The Eden that we lost is found again/ in flower pots that line the avenues/ of sacred infinitude and symmetry.”
I am confident in her heart’s appeal to The One Heart.
I am resolute in the beauty of such/her serenades.
And through that “Other”, which you, Ms Ham, and mystics describe as yet the same Self, we shall eventually see.
